Printing life, layer by layer: inside the BioProS project
For centuries we gave shape to matter by removing it: a sculptor strips away everything superfluous from a block of stone until the figure "emerges". Additive manufacturing reversed this logic — instead of removing, it adds: starting from a digital model, it builds objects layer by layer. In recent years that same principle has met a new and surprising territory: biology. This is bioprinting, 3D printing applied to biological material — a frontier of research that brings manufacturing together with the life sciences.
